What is a School Counselor?


School counselors are professional educators with a mental health perspective who understand and respond to challenges presented by today's diverse student population. School counselors work with students, parents and school staff to assist students in becoming successful learners.

Belief Statements

The mission of the Simpson Central School Counseling Department is to provide a comprehensive, data-driven, and student-focused school counseling program that addresses the academic, social/ emotional, and career readiness needs of all students in order to foster a positive school culture that enables every student to believe, achieve, and succeed everyday.

The vision of the Simpson Central School Counseling Department is that all stakeholders will work collaboratively to prepare students for success in the future by creating a positive school culture that fosters equity and belonging to help each student reach their fullest potential.  Every student will acquire the knowledge, skills, and mindsets necessary to graduate from high school prepared to pursue their individual goals and passions and will ultimately become socially intelligent, competent, and contributing members of their community and the global society.

The professional school counselor at Simpson Central School believes that:

*All students are important and valuable

*All students have unique ability and potential to achieve

*All students have the right to participate in the comprehensive school counseling program

*All students have differences and special needs that should be acknowledged and addressed

*All students have the right to a state-certified, master's level, professional school counselor who collaborates with educators, families, and the community as an advocate for student success

And that the school counseling program at Simpson Central:

*Is comprehensive in design

*Is proactive in nature

*Is an integral part of the total education program for student success

*Serves all students at the prevention level

*Is culturally sustaining and promotes diversity, equity, and access for all students

*Is guided by data and driven by program development and evaluation, while being responsive to specific individual and school needs

*Seeks assistance and input from its advisory council, school, and community members

And that the professional school counselor at Simpson Central School should:

*Abide by the professional school counseling ethics as advocated by the American School Counselor Association

*Participate in professional development activities essential to maintain a quality school counseling program
